My Tortoise Eats Only Lettuce

Lettuce, on the other hand, barely contains any nutrients that a tortoise needs, it has a little sugar and a lot of water and a few other minerals. So, you really need to get the tortoise to change from this – finely chop the lettuce with other healthier dark green leafy vegetables.

Dark, leafy greens such as romaine lettuce, kale, collard, mustard and dandelion greens should make up the bulk of the diet. Other greens to try include: bok choy, red leaf or green leaf lettuce, butter lettuce, water cress, escarole, parsley, turnip greens and green onions.
Turtles can eat human foods such as fish, meat, cooked ground beef, fruits, vegetables and eggs. However, some of these should only be fed in moderation.
He said: “They are particularly resilient and can survive for two to three years without food. In the wild they eat fruit, leaves, dead animals, even faeces.”
Healthy tortoises do eat every day but can easily skip a meal or two. On the colder months they do not necessarily eat every day. When tortoises hibernate, they do not eat for weeks as their metabolism slows down significantly.
Unless your tortoise is a fruit-eating species, the fruit of the Banana or Plantain (Plantain is a variety of Banana that is eaten cooked, as a vegetable) should not be part of their diet, as it is too high in starch, sugars, and potassium.
Greens and vegetables:

Vegetables should be about 10-15% of the diet. These can include: grated raw carrots, winter squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, broccoli, corn on the cob; greens such as collards, dandelions, escarole, romaine, kale.

Excitement. An excited tortoise will willingly move toward whatever has her attention. They often run, or move as fast as they can. You can tell they are excited by the speed and surety of their movements.
Fresh water should be provided to all tortoises on a regular basis. Even true desert species such as Testudo kleinmanni, Geochelone sulcata and Gopherus agassizii will drink given the opportunity.
Still, real turtles don`t enjoy pizza, as the animals can`t digest dairy, ruling out a cheese-covered food.
Feeding wild-caught fish and amphibians is not recommended, as they may contain parasites and other infectious organisms that may affect the turtle. Raw meat, fish, or chicken from the grocery store does not contain a balance of calcium and phosphorus for a turtle and is not recommended as a food source for turtles.
Tortoise expert and breeder Ed Piroj on the other hand said he himself leaves his tortoises alone when he goes away for less than ten days: “They are reptiles. If they are well fed and well hydrated they can go months without food or water. Dropping the temperature will help.”
As wild animals that are predominantly solitary creatures, they do not get lonely and are perfectly happy to live a life of solitude. Tortoises are not social creatures and do not need the same social interactions that other animals may need to develop and survive.
A tortoise will generally only sleep when there`s no UV lighting on, or if the sun`s gone down (if he`s kept outside). Although this will vary by tortoise. If your tort`s sleeping a lot in the day, check out the above section. Your Tortoise`s UV lighting should be on for 12 hours a day.
Temperature: One of the most common reasons for pet tortoises losing their appetite is that their surroundings are too cold. The trend today is to keep young hatchlings on open tortoise tables, rather than in enclosed vivariums where the ventilation is more restricted and the temperature is higher.
Tortoises often don`t appear to know which foods are good to eat and which are not, and there is some evidence of tortoises dying after eating plants such as Buttercups, Daffodils and Foxgloves, which are considered poisonous.
The ripe fruit has a high sugar content, low level of calcium and high phosphorus content with almost no fibre, so it is not nourishing and we do not recommend feeding it. Tortoises do find tomatoes tasty though, and the one situation in which it might be acceptable to feed is when it is used to administer medication.
It is perfectly safe to give your chelonian friend a bath, in fact he/she might actually like it! All one needs is a toothbrush, a tub of some sort large enough to accommodate the tortoises, and tepid water, no deeper than is necessary to cover the entire plastron, and a few centimetres of the carapace.
Pet tortoises should have access to clean, fresh drinking water at all times so that they drink whenever they want. Tortoises also drink and get hydrated from their regular soaks and by absorbing water from their food.
How Often Should You Feed Your Tortoise? Feed hatchlings and young tortoises daily or divide the daily portion in two and feed morning and afternoon. Adult tortoises can be fed daily or you may choose to omit to feed for one day a week.
Tortoise Food

Tortoises eat lettuce, clover, tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, potato peelings, grass, apples and carrots. Even at this age, all these foods are available to it`s diet. The baby tortoise needs to be dipped in a dish of water every 5 hours so it doesn`t dehydrate.

Although not toxic, Cabbage contains goitrogens that interfere with thyroid activity and could damage the liver and kidneys. Therefore we do not advise feeding Cabbage to your tortoise.
Even though tortoises and turtles don`t speak the same language as humans, they can understand your tone of voice and your caring touch. The longer they`ve known you, the more they`ll understand when you give them a loving, gentle shell rub. Even better, learn the language of your pet!
Most turtles, especially young ones, should be fed daily. For an adult box turtle, a day`s food would be three tablespoons of the vegetable mixture and a couple of earthworms. You know your turtle is hungry when it begins to roam around its enclosure checking the place where you feed it.

Q. My cocker spaniel is 9 years old. He has involuntary bowel movements (little drops) very frequently, especially when he is asleep.
ANSWER : A. Is your dog on a senior dog food? I would get your dog on a high quality high protien dog food. Ask a pet store assosicate or your regular vet for a food recommendation. When you buy a better food the dog will have to eat less to get the same amount of energy from the food. The dog has to eat more of the cheaper foods to get the energy it needs from it. Meaning more poop and buying more food. So the cost really evens out. So the lessen your dogs bowel movements get on a better senior dog food. Next talk to your vet they may have a recommendation. If you switch dogs do it slowly by mixing the foods. Start with 10% new 90% old mixed for at least a week until you have switched to 100% new 0% old. Senior foods have more fiber to help with bowel movements. Take the dog outside to go potty more frequently, right before bed time.

Q. How much dry kitten food should my 16 week old kitten be eating?
ANSWER : A. It would actually be better to feed your kitten canned food, as dry food has a lot of carbohydrates. Cats are obligatory carnivores, and not carb-eaters. In order to give you an amount to feed for dry food I would need to know which food you are feeding as they are all different. I suggest you check on the cat food bag. If the bag does not give you an amount, I would not trust it to be a complete food. You should then get a food from a reputable company such as Hill’s Science diet, or similar. As for wet food feed three times daily around 2oz each time, best to feed the pate style food.

Q. My cat can only eat strained baby food consistency food. What do I add to strained meat to give her what she needs? She is a torti Persian 5 lbs
ANSWER : A. You should be offering her some wet cat food. Any brand is okay, but you could find a high quality food if you look hard. Cats prefer getting their water from their food, so it’s important to use wet food for a cat instead of just dry food. It’s okay to feed her white meat chicken, and things like that if you want, but you should definitely be feeding some sort of CAT FOOD.. and I bet wet food would be appealing to her considering it’s very moist, like baby food. You can even mash it up further, and look for a food that is really liquidy.

Q. My dog won’t stop eating cat litter, old diapers and she even tried eating glass
ANSWER : A. Don’t let your dog have access to cat liter and old diapers. Have a trash with a lid for the diapers and put a hood on the cat box or put it in a room the dog can’t get to. If your dog is trying to eat other things maybe he’s looking for more nutrients in his diet that his food isn’t giving him. Look for a higher quality high protien food at the pet store. Have someone help you at the pet store pick out a food or ask your regular vet their food recommendation. One with the first ingredent as a meat like deboned chicken. If your dogs foods main ingredient (first one listed) is a corn or chicken by product that is bad. You will need to slowly transition the dogs food over by mixing the foods and slowly adding more new and less old to the food for at least a week.

Q. Hi I have two cats that are a year old. I constantly have dry food in their bowl, but how many sachets of wet food should I give them?
ANSWER : A. They do not require wet food if they have sufficient, complete formula dry food; most cats will self regulate their intake of dry food. You can use sachets as a treat or regular meal but it will be important to monitor their body weight and make sure they are not becoming overweight with the addition to ad lib dry food; you may have to restrict their dry food if this is the case. Every brand is different in its feeding recommendations also so it is impossible to advise about ‘how much food’. Your vet tech can recommend if they need to gain or indeed lose weight and can advise in relation to specific brands for your cats

Q. I rescued my Lily at 7months and she was eating Purina puppy chow. I transitioned her to Blue Wilderness and since then she has had GI issues?
ANSWER : A. Stomach upset is a very common problem in our pets and occurs for may different reasons. As a general rule when you switch from one dog food to another it is always a good idea to make a slow transition from one food to the next. Most people would agree that you should mix a small amount of the new food in with the old food and gradually decrease the old food amount and slowly increase the new food amount until you are feeding mostly new food. You may also want to try going back to your old Purina diet until the GI issues quiet down and then try a slower transition to the new diet.

Q. My 20 month Cavalier doesn’t eat unless I let him eat from my finger, then he eats. Sometimes he will only eat once a day and leave his food.
ANSWER : A. It is possible that your dog is just not satisfied with his current food, or may be a picky eater. There are several things you can try to encourage your dog to eat.

The first step is to remove any additional treats or people food that may be more enticing to your dog than his own meal. If you feel you must give him some form of treat, be sure to place them directly in his food bowl and mixed with his regular diet. This allows him to get some snacks while also “forcing” him to try out his current meal to get the reward.

Enticing your dog to try his food by adding a pet-safe gravy or even a few treats of plain boiled chicken mixed in can help. Be sure to mix the foods thoroughly so he must explore his own food before getting the treat.

Some small breed dogs may also have a hard time with certain bowls and their collars. If there is a metal name tag on the collar and a metal bowl, the clinking sound can sometimes scare off dogs and make them not want to eat from their bowl. Using a bowl of a different material, or removing the collar prior to a meal may help with this issue.

Your dog may also just not be into his current food and may like another variety better. You can try a new variety by gradually switching over a period of 7-9 days, slowly adding in more new food and removing old until it is switched. This change may encourage him to try out meals again, and the slow changeover will allow his body to adjust to the new diet without digestive upset.
