A. I would recheck with a vet to see what the tear production is like and also add in Genteal ointment or drops to help with the dry eye. If it’s only dry eye you should be able to discontinue the neo poly bac, but the cyclosporine will also help so keep that up. Only way to know if it’s helping is to get a schirmer tear test done and see the values. Also I would recommend seeing an eye doctor for him to determine if there is more going on than just the dry eye, which is more than likely causing the ulcers.
How to Identify Common Pet Problems ?
Our sources include academic articles, blog posts, and personal essays from experienced pet care professionals :
Side effects may include mild burning, stinging, irritation, or redness of the eyes, eyelid spasm, or loss of hair around the eye. More serious side effects include difficulty breathing or swelling of the throat, which could indicate an allergic reaction.
Neo-Poly-Bac is a medicated ointment prescribed to help treat bacterial eye infections in dogs. Applied directly, it treats conditions such as conjunctivitis, keratitis and keratoconjunctivitis, blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis to relieve irritated and infected eyes in pets.
Cyclosporine eye drops and ophthalmic ointment are used in dogs to treat dry eye and pannus. The veterinary term for dry eye is keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS. When used to treat KCS in dogs, cyclosporine causes increased tear production and decreases local inflammation in the eye and tear gland.
What Are the Risks? Individuals previously treated with methotrexate or other immunosuppressive agents, PUVA, UVB, coal tar, or radiation therapy are at an increased risk of developing skin cancer when taking cyclosporine. Additional risks with cyclosporine include kidney damage.
The clinical presentation may include tremors, restlessness, dysesthesias of the palms and soles, seizures, and altered mental status with confusion and visual or auditory hallucinations; cortical blindness, encephalopathy, and coma are less common.
This product contains neomycin, bacitracin, and polymyxin, which are antibiotics that work by stopping the growth of bacteria. It also contains hydrocortisone, which is an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid that works by reducing swelling.
I don`t think they`re quite the same – Viscotears (and all the other cheaper artificial tear products) can be very helpful for dry eyes (by providing lubrication) but am pretty sure Optimmune contains Cyclosporine (an immunosuppressant drug) which is why it is so expensive and is prescription only.
Are there any potential side effects from cyclosporine? The most common side effects of cyclosporine in dogs and cats are gastrointestinal side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite (anorexia). These side effects usually decrease over time.
How long should my dog take to respond to ciclosporin Optimmune? Most dogs show an improvement in the appearance of their eyes within two weeks of starting ciclosporin ointment. It can take up to six weeks for the increase in tear production to be maximal.
There are two commonly used ophthalmic medications to stimulate tear production, cyclosporine (brand name Optimmune®) and tacrolimus. Both are easily placed in the eyes once or twice daily. These drugs are very safe and most pets improve dramatically with their consistent use.
Symptoms of Dry Eye Syndrome in Dogs
Red, inflamed, irritated, and painful eyes. Redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, or the tissues around the eye. Frequent squinting and blinking. Dryness on the surface of the cornea—the outer clear dome-shaped part of the eye.
Avoid excessive intake of high potassium foods (bananas, oranges, orange juice, potatoes, spinach, etc). Do not eat grapefruits, grapefruit juice or any soda (Fresca) or fruit juice blend that contains grapefruit juice. Grapefruit can increase your levels of cyclosporine to a potentially toxic level.
Cyclosporine increases the risk of skin and lymphoid tissue malignancies in organ transplant patients. A similar increase has been shown among psoriasis patients, but no data exist on the carcinogenic risk of cyclosporine monotherapy in skin diseases.
Cyclosporine is a very strong medicine. It can cause side effects that can be very serious, such as kidney problems. It may also decrease the body`s ability to fight infections. You and your doctor should talk about the benefits of this medicine as well as the risks of using it.
This medicine may cause blurred vision or other vision problems. If any of these occur, do not drive or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you. While applying this medicine, your eyes will probably sting or burn for a short time. This is to be expected.
Your symptoms should begin to improve during the first few days of treatment with neomycin, polymyxin, and hydrocortisone otic combination. If your symptoms do not improve after one week or get worse, call your doctor.
Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Use of this medication for prolonged/repeated periods may result in a new fungal eye infection and may increase your risk for other eye problems (such as glaucoma, cataracts, delayed wound healing).
Neo-Polycin can treat infections in the eye and around the eyelid, such as pink eye, keratitis, and blepharitis, that are caused by common bacteria that affect the eye. Neo-Polycin can`t treat any eye infections that are caused by a virus or fungus.
What are the potential side effects of Neo Poly Dex Ophthalmic? Serious side effects are not expected when using this medication. However, some burning, stinging, irritation, itching, redness, blurred vision, eyelid itching, eyelid swelling, or sensitivity to light may occur.
Patients treated with the calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) cyclosporine and tacrolimus are at high risk of developing kidney injury [1].
Dogs on cyclosporine may develop a thicker coat than usual and more shedding than usual can be expected. Other side effects reported include heavy callusing on the footpads, red/swollen ear flaps, and proliferation of the gums.
“Chronic dry eye may lead to ulcers that may become infected and rupture,” warns Dr. Martins. “Without the proper lubrication on the eye, pigment will build up over the cornea and result in permanent blindness.” If you have any questions about your pet`s eyes, please contact your local veterinarian.
Lots of factors affect drug prices. However, one common cause for higher consumer cost is a lack of competition. Restasis is a brand-name drug. These drugs are often under patent when first released, meaning no one else can manufacture them.
In most dogs however, dry eye is a permanent condition that cannot be cured, only controlled. Your pet will likely require some degree of medication long-term. Your ophthalmologist will work to slowly decrease medications over time to find the lowest maintenance level necessary to control the condition.
